Day 1 - 6/2/08

We woke up early (of course) and hit the road for Cheryl's at 6:30 am. Our flight out of O'Hare was delayed, so when we reachd Minneapolis we had to hustle to the far end of the terminal to catch our plane to Fairbanks. They were already boarding when we got there. We learned later there is only 1 flight a day into Fairbanks from Minneapolis.

The flight was 5 1/2 hours and a delay of about 20 minutes. It was very long and very cramped. the plan was full--mostly people going on a cruise.

As always when flying, there are periods you can see the ground and it's fascinating. Going over the Canadian Rockies, though, was extra special. Cheryl had the window seat and I made her very uncomfortable because I kept leaning over to get a look or take a picture.

We landed at 8 pm alaska time--11 pm CDT. This the parking lot at the airport. We were bone tired but wide awake. It was full sunlight. I'm writing this at 5 am the next day and it's full sun again. On the bus from the airport we learned sunset was at 12:07 am. We were eating supper at about 10 pm Alaska (1 am CDT) and went to bed at 11 pm Alaska (2 am CDT)--the sun was still shining in the windows.

The temperature when we arrived last night was 70 degrees. I'm not sure what the temperature was the next morning but it felt pretty much like morning at the campground.
